Reds veteran first baseman Joey Votto announced that he will have season-ending surgery for a rotator cuff tear this Friday.

Votto was held out of the lineup this afternoon against the Phillies, and he won’t see the field for the remainder of the season.

The 38-year-old finishes his 2022 campaign batting .205/.319/.370 with 11 home runs and 41 RBI across 91 games.

Votto is owed a base salary of $25 million for the next two seasons, and his contract includes a club option for 2024 that has a $7 million buyout option.

Cincinnati hold a terrible .397 winning percentage this season with a 46-70 record, so losing Votto doesn’t carry much weight.
