Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will face Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy match in September rather than facing Dmitry Bivol in a rematch.
Alvarez will return to super-middleweight, where he is undisputed champion after suffering a beat down from Bivol earlier this month.
The 31-year-old had the option of a rematch with Bivol, but he’s elected to honor his agreement with GGG.
Golovkin, now 40, has won four fights since losing to Canelo in 2018, reclaiming the IBF and WBA (Super) middleweight titles.
The trilogy match is set for September 17, with no venue being set just yet.
Alvarez vs. Bivol earned a low 550K pay-per-view sales, comparing to 1.1 million in Canelo vs. GGG II.
Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin III will be fighting for For WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring super middleweight titles.
