Kansas City Royals utility man Whit Merrifield has been diagnosed with a bone bruise and ligament swelling in his right toe.
Merrifield will not be on the Royals lineup card Monday afternoon for the first time in a franchise-record 553 games.
The 33-year-old will likely be headed to the injury list due to the injury and may not return until after the All-Star break.
Merrifield was slashing career-lows midway through the 2022 season, batting .240/.292/.343, but he’s compiled 45 runs, 36 RBI, and 14 steals.
The Royals are currently last in the AL Central with a 32-52 record, and losing Merrifield won’t help the situation.
