Cavs Former Assistant Coach Jim Boylan Suing Team for Age Discrimination

Former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Jim Boylan, a member of recently fired head coach Tyronn Lue’s championship club, sued the organization for age discrimination on Thursday.

At the end of last season, both Lue and Cavs general manager Koby Altman allegedly told 63-year-old Boylan that his contract would not be renewed because of “the team’s interest in going younger” at the coaching position.

The coaching staff did indeed in fact get younger, as they promoted former player development coach Dan Geriot (age 29) to full-time assistant and gave Damon Jones (age 42), “a more robust assistant coaching role,” according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

According to the lawsuit, Boylan then had a conversation with Altman, who informed him that the organization was looking for someone “younger,” and the change had nothing to do with the coaching performance.

Boylan is looking to retain compensatory damages “in excess of $25,000” from the Cavaliers.
